The brief

A considered, long-term finish.

Four Oaks Painting & Decorating was delighted to complete the interior decoration of this beautiful Victorian property in Sutton Coldfield, originally built in 1870. Homes of this age require a very different approach to modern decorating, with every surface presenting its own unique challenges.

Throughout the property, the original exposed oak beams, handcrafted timber doors and traditional oak framework were carefully protected and enhanced, allowing the history of the home to remain the focal point while giving the interior a fresh, clean and modern finish.

As part of the renovation, our team also designed, supplied and installed bespoke MDF wall panelling to complement the character of the property — carefully measured, installed, caulked, filled and prepared before being professionally decorated to create a timeless feature that blends seamlessly with the original 19th-century architecture.

Understanding a 155-year-old home
01

Understanding a 155-year-old home

Before any paint was opened, the property was walked room by room to map every original oak beam, timber door and section of exposed framework. Age-related movement, uneven plaster and irregular timber profiles were all noted so the preparation plan respected the character of the home rather than fighting against it.

Preparation & protection
02

Preparation & protection

Imperfections were filled and repaired throughout, prepared surfaces were sanded smooth, and joints and gaps were carefully caulked where required. Original oak beams, timber doors and flooring were fully protected, and the site was kept clean and organised throughout — essential in an occupied period home.

Bespoke MDF wall panelling

Bespoke MDF wall panelling

Our team designed, supplied and installed bespoke MDF wall panelling to complement the property. Every section was measured to the room, installed, caulked, filled and prepared before being decorated to a furniture-grade finish — a timeless feature that sits comfortably alongside the original 19th-century architecture.

Cutting-in around the beams
04

Cutting-in around the beams

Because no two oak beams were straight or uniform, every edge was hand cut-in with a brush to achieve crisp, clean paint lines without compromising the property's original character. This is slow, skilled work — and it's what separates a period-property finish from a standard repaint.

Doors, joinery & staircase
05

Doors, joinery & staircase

Original handcrafted timber doors, ironmongery and the staircase framework were left as untouched featured timber, while surrounding walls, architraves and skirtings were decorated in premium, hard-wearing coatings. The contrast between the historic oak and the freshly painted white joinery gives every space a lifted, contemporary feel.

The finished home

The finished home

The finished interior feels brighter, cleaner and more contemporary while still celebrating the craftsmanship and history of a property that has stood for over 150 years. Every room reads as a considered blend of Victorian character and modern decorating standards.

Preparation & finish.

Preparation

Every surface was filled, sanded and caulked before decoration. Original oak beams, handcrafted timber doors and carpets were fully protected and masked. Because no two beams were straight, every edge was hand cut-in to achieve crisp paint lines without touching the timber.

Finish details

Walls and ceilings were finished in a soft, contemporary off-white to brighten the interior and let the original oak framework read as the focal point. Bespoke MDF wall panelling was measured, installed, caulked, filled and decorated to a furniture-grade finish, blending seamlessly with the 19th-century architecture.

Outcome

The customer result.

The completed project delivered a home that feels brighter, cleaner and more contemporary while still celebrating the craftsmanship and history of a property that has stood for over 150 years.

Combining traditional features with modern craftsmanship — sensitive preparation, hand cutting-in around every beam, and bespoke MDF panelling installed to a furniture-grade finish — transformed the interior without erasing any of its Victorian character.

This project is a strong example of the standard Four Oaks Painting & Decorating brings to period and character properties across Sutton Coldfield, Four Oaks, Mere Green, Lichfield, Tamworth, Solihull and the wider West Midlands.
