Typical Project Timelines

How long a project of this type usually takes.

Exterior projects are scheduled around weather conditions to ensure proper curing and long-term durability. A typical semi-detached or detached repaint runs 1–2 weeks once on site.

Survey & moisture check
Before scheduling
Elevation-by-elevation inspection, repair scope agreed, timber tested.
Repairs & preparation
2–4 days
Burning off, sanding back, timber splicing and Repaircare where required.
Priming & topcoats
3–5 days
Substrate-appropriate primers, two topcoats applied in suitable conditions.
Final inspection
Last day on site
Every elevation walked with you before scaffold strike.

Programmes are confirmed weather-dependent. We never apply coatings in unsuitable conditions — long-term durability is the priority.

Technical specification

How the work is actually specified.

Exterior work fails when prep is rushed or the wrong system is specified. We work to manufacturer-grade specifications on render, masonry, joinery and metalwork — with moisture-tested substrates and proper repair before any coating goes on.

  • Coating system

    • Masonry: stabiliser where required, then two coats Sandtex Trade High Cover or Dulux Weathershield Smooth Masonry
    • Joinery: Zinsser Cover Stain or Sikkens Cetol HLSe primer, two topcoats Sikkens Rubbol AZ Plus / Teknos Nordica Eko 33 / Weathershield Satin or Gloss
    • Metalwork: rust-converting primer, then Bedec MSP or Owatrol-based system
    • Lime-based fillers and breathable systems on period and listed properties
  • Substrate & preparation

    • Full elevation survey — substrate, movement, moisture, repair scope
    • Hot-air strip on lifted paint, sanding back to sound substrate
    • Timber moisture content tested below 18% before priming
    • End-grain sealed; beads re-puttied with Repaircare Dryflex or linseed putty on heritage windows
    • Wet-rot treatment and epoxy splice repairs where timber is recoverable
  • Product selection

    • Sikkens — long-term proven joinery system on UK weather
    • Dulux Weathershield and Sandtex Trade — predictable masonry performance
    • Teknos Nordica Eko 33 — low-VOC waterborne, factory-grade sheen retention
    • Repaircare for structural timber repair — load-bearing, paintable, decades-long
  • Finish & durability

    • 8–10 year repaint cycle on south and west elevations with a Sikkens spec
    • Sash windows restored properly typically run 12+ years before next overhaul
    • Masonry systems matched to substrate breathability — no trapped moisture
    • Written paint specification left for future touch-ups and recoats
