The brief

A considered, long-term finish.

Four Oaks Painting & Decorating recently completed this interior decorating project for a homeowner in Walmley, Sutton Coldfield, covering the lounge along with the hall, stairs and landing.

The lounge previously had dark feature walls around the fireplace which made the room feel much heavier. The customer wanted a cleaner, brighter finish while keeping the existing natural timber flooring, fireplace and other features.

The hall, stairs and landing were also given a full refresh to create a consistent finish through one of the busiest areas of the home.

Before — Dark Lounge Feature Walls
01

Before — Dark Lounge Feature Walls

The lounge as we found it: dark feature walls wrapping around the fireplace and chimney breast, making the room feel heavy and considerably smaller than it is.

Protection & Preparation
02

Protection & Preparation

Furniture moved to the centre of the room and fully sheeted, floors covered, the fireplace masked and the light fitting bagged off. Surfaces were filled, sanded and made good, with colour samples tried on the wall before work began.

Finished Lounge

Finished Lounge

The finished lounge in the new light scheme — the room feels brighter, cleaner and much larger, with the timber flooring and fireplace now standing out instead of competing with dark walls.

Work underway on the landing — the oak balustrade and handrail sheeted and taped off, floors protected, and walls, ceilings and woodwork prepared ahead of the finishing coats.

Finished Landing

Finished Landing

The completed landing with freshly decorated walls, ceiling, doors, frames and skirtings, cut in cleanly around the window and the existing oak newel post.

Craft

Preparation & finish.

Preparation

Furniture was moved into the centre of the lounge and fully protected, with floor coverings used throughout the working areas. Existing surfaces were checked over before decorating, with minor imperfections filled, sanded and made good where required. The existing dark walls needed particular attention to achieve an even, solid finish when changing over to the much lighter colour. On the staircase, the natural timber balustrade and handrails were carefully protected while the surrounding walls and painted woodwork were redecorated.

Finish details

Removing the dark walls has completely opened up the lounge, making it feel lighter, cleaner and considerably bigger while allowing the fireplace and timber flooring to stand out. The hall, stairs and landing now carry the same fresh finish through the property, with the natural oak staircase providing a warm contrast against the newly decorated walls and woodwork.

Services included

Everything in scope.

  • Filling, sanding and preparation of walls and woodwork

Outcome

The difference is huge. Removing the dark walls has completely opened up the lounge, making it feel lighter, cleaner and considerably bigger while allowing the fireplace and timber flooring to stand out.
