What's included in staircase decorating?
Preparation, filling and caulking of spindles, handrails, newel posts and skirting, priming, and two coats of a durable water-based satin on woodwork with scrubbable matt on the surrounding walls and ceilings — all with proper access over the stairwell void and full carpet protection.
What's involved.
The staircase is one of the hardest-working areas in any home. Skirting gets kicked, handrails get gripped, spindles show every drip, and half-landings pick up scuffs from bags and shoes. Getting a clean, durable finish here needs proper preparation, the right products and safe access over the void.
We prep every element — filling knocks, caulking joints, sanding old paintwork flat, stain-blocking where needed — before priming and topcoating. Woodwork is finished in a hard-wearing water-based satin that resists yellowing and scuffing, and walls get a scrubbable durable matt where the traffic is highest.

How the work runs.
Access planning
Stair boards or platform set up over the stairwell void so we can safely reach high walls and ceilings without leaning off spindles.
Protection
Runner carpets, treads and any adjacent floor or furniture masked and covered before any sanding starts.
Preparation
Woodwork filled, caulked and sanded flat. Walls patched, cracks raked out and filled, ceilings prepped. Stain block on knots and any water marks.
Priming
Bare wood and repairs primed. Spindles, handrails and newels get particular attention — this is where drips and misses show.
Topcoats
Two coats of scuff-resistant satin on woodwork, durable matt on walls and ceilings. Colour changes cut in cleanly.
Snag & handover
Full walk-round in daylight, snagging touched in, protection lifted, site vacuumed and handed back clean.

Yes. Most staircase jobs are a full hall, stairs and landing package — walls, ceilings, woodwork, doors and any panelling in one visit.
How do you reach the high walls over the stairs?+
We use stair boards or a purpose-built platform over the stairwell void — never leaning off spindles or ladders resting on treads.
Which paint do you use on spindles and handrails?+
A hard-wearing water-based satin that resists yellowing and scuffing. Traditional oil-based finishes are available on request but tend to yellow over time.
Do you protect the carpet?+
Yes. Stair carpet is fully covered before any sanding and stays protected until we hand back.
Can you change the colour of the spindles and handrail?+
Yes — dark handrails with white spindles, all-black, all-white or any custom scheme. We prep and prime to give the new colour a clean base.
Do you also fit wall panelling on the staircase wall?+
Yes. We often panel the staircase wall as part of the same project so everything's caulked, primed and decorated in one go.
How long does a typical staircase take?+
A standard hall, stairs and landing runs 4–6 working days depending on repairs, doors, panelling and colour changes.
