Bespoke Media Wall MDF Spray Finish
A bespoke MDF media wall in Edgbaston professionally prepared, primed and sprayed in a low-sheen eggshell for a smooth, furniture-grade finish.
A considered, long-term finish.
Four Oaks Painting & Decorating was commissioned to prepare, prime and spray this bespoke MDF media wall in Edgbaston.
Media walls only look their best when the MDF is properly sealed, sanded and sprayed — anything less and the joints, edges and grain start to show. The brief here was a clean, seamless, furniture-grade finish that made the media wall the natural focal point of the room.
Preparation was the largest single phase, followed by a controlled priming and spray programme completed over around four days on site.
The detail behind the finish.
What this project demanded.
- 01Properly sealing MDF joints, edges and cut ends
- 02Achieving a perfectly smooth sprayable surface
- 03Delivering a furniture-grade sprayed finish in a residential room
- 04Protecting surrounding walls, floors and finishes from overspray
A considered, long-term finish.
Preparation was the largest single phase of this Edgbaston project. Old paint was sanded back where required, walls were filled and re-skimmed in places, and all woodwork was caulked and primed. Particular care was taken on the original joinery, which had decades of overpainting to address.
Walls were finished in Farrow & Ball Estate Emulsion across a curated palette specified with the client. Woodwork was hand-prepared and finished in Tikkurila Helmi 30 — chosen for its durability and depth — and joinery was sprayed in our controlled environment for a furniture-grade result.
The project was completed on schedule and within budget, with minimal disruption to the household. The finished result is sharp, hardwearing and built to perform for years rather than seasons.
Preparation & finish.
Preparation
All MDF joints, fixings and cut edges were filled and worked back. The whole unit was sanded with Mirka dustless extraction to keep the room clean, then sealed with MDF primer and Zinsser BIN primer for a stable, absorbent-free base and a smooth sprayable surface. Surrounding walls, floors and finishes were precision-masked before any coating was applied.
Finish details
Finished in a 7% sheen sprayed eggshell for a refined, architectural look — soft to the eye, hard-wearing in daily use and closer to fitted furniture than a hand-painted joinery finish.
